The Storming of the Winterpalace

“Storming of the Winter Palace. Theater as History”

The SNF-funded exhibition “The Storming of the Winter Palace: History as Theatre” first took place from 24/09/2017 to 25/10/2017 at the Gessnerallee Zürich (north wing). From 24 November until 8 April, the exhibition was presented, under the slightly changed title “The Storming of the Winter Palace: Forensics of an Image” (24/11/2017-8/4/2018), at the HMKV in Dortmund and is now in Łodz, Poland at the Muzeum Sztuki (Art Museum, 6/4/2018-3/6/18).

In Russian performance art history the mass spectacle “The Storming of the Winter Palace” is shown as one of the first collective performances. In our project we would not include this mass spectacle into performance art history, but there are some performances, happenings or actions that are linked to this event or to the reenactments of the “Storming of the Winterpalace”. In our exhibition we present some of those “reenactments” by Orange Alternative (Poland 1987) or by Milo Rau (Berlin 2017).
